The Bulldogs secured a 6-3 victory over the Blaze on December 8, 1985, at Aberdare, bringing their season record to 6-8 and improving to 1-3 in the division under head coach Louis Runyon. The game was dominated by defense and special teams, with neither offense consistently able to move the ball into scoring range.
The Blaze took an early 3-0 lead in the opening quarter when kicker John Peeler converted a 37-yard field goal with 10:09 remaining. Peeler also had a 55-yard field goal attempt wide right just before halftime that could have tied the game but fell short.
The Bulldogs responded just before the half, scoring their lone touchdown in the second quarter. Quarterback David Glover completed a 45-yard pass to wide receiver James Martinez, who scored the touchdown with 1:25 remaining in the half. Martinez, who finished with 64 receiving yards and a rushing touchdown, also contributed on special teams with a fair catch and a punt return.
However, the extra point attempt by Earl Rivera was no good, missing wide right and leaving the score 6-3. Both teams failed to convert on multiple opportunities to extend or tie the game after that.
Defensively, the Bulldogs forced two interceptions and two fumble recoveries while sacking Blaze quarterbacks twice. Ronald Hanna led the Bulldogs defensive effort with two sacks. On offense, Glover completed 27 of 42 passes for 194 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Bulldog running game was limited to 52 yards on 23 carries.
The Blaze also struggled offensively, with quarterback Robert Peed completing 25 of 43 passes for 182 yards but no touchdowns and one interception. Their ground game accounted for 48 yards on 17 carries. The Blaze defense forced one interception and two fumble recoveries, with linebacker William Stalker contributing two forced fumbles.
Special teams played a critical role in field position battles throughout the contest, showcasing multiple long punts and fair catches. Despite few scoring opportunities, penalties were minimal with six calls for 38 yards against the Bulldogs and three for 15 yards on the Blaze.
With this win, the Bulldogs extend their winning streak to one but remain eliminated from playoff contention, holding third place in the division. The Blaze continue their losing skid to two and hold last place in the division, also eliminated from postseason play.
The teams will look to close the season on a stronger note, but Tuesday's contest highlighted stout defenses and a cautious offensive approach from both sides.
